Code Enforcement Department

The priority of the Code Enforcement Department is to address life safety issues that pose a threat to the health, safety, well being and quality of life for residents and guests in the City of New Smyrna Beach. It is because our citizens want safe, sound neighborhoods that we are proactive in our code enforcement efforts.

Often the best way to solve a problem is to become a part of the solution. You can help to make the City of New Smyrna Beach a cleaner, safer community by keeping your property clean. Most common concerns are substandard structures, high weeds and grass, trash and debris accumulation, open storage, junk vehicles and front yard parking.

Reporting violators is important to the overall quality of life in our community. It also helps our City code inspectors to do a better job. To expedite service and response, make sure that you have a specific address or block before calling or filing a complaint online along with any additional information that will help to get the problem cleaned up.

The City’s Code Enforcement staff is responsible for enforcing the City’s non-criminal codes. The function is a complaint-based effort that involves:
  • Investigation of possible violations
  • Determining needed corrective action
  • Working with property owners to resolve code violations
If we cannot resolve an issue at the staff level, the Code Enforcement Board is available to pursue other avenues to force compliance.

The Code Enforcement Board is a citizen board empowered to hear cases brought by the code enforcement staff.
